What Happened
In September 2023, the ransomware group Ransomed.vc claimed to have breached Sony Entertainment’s systems and stolen approximately 260 GB of proprietary data, including 6,000 files containing internal documents, source code, PowerPoint presentations, and system details. The group posted the stolen data samples on dark web forums on September 25, 2023, and threatened to sell the data publicly by September 28 if Sony did not negotiate a ransom payment, stating “We won’t ransom them! We will sell the data.” Sony responded by confirming it was investigating the alleged breach but did not provide detailed information about the incident, and there was no indication that customer or business partner data was compromised. A competing threat actor named MajorNelson later disputed Ransomed.vc’s claims, alleging they were attempting to scam and gain influence rather than conducting a legitimate breach.
