What Happened
In January 2020, Mathway, a popular math-solving app, suffered a data breach when the hacker group ShinyHunters accessed the company’s backend, dumped the database, and stole over 25 million user records, which were later sold on dark web marketplaces starting in May 2020 for around $4,000 in cryptocurrency. The exposed data included email addresses, names, salted and hashed passwords (with unknown hashing algorithm), Google and Facebook IDs, device information, and social media profiles, but no credit card details or financial information were affected. Mathway confirmed the incident on May 15, 2020, after a tip, launched an investigation with cybersecurity experts, forced password changes, enhanced security measures, and notified users via email, advising them to update passwords on Mathway and any reused accounts elsewhere.
